Employment at Freewheelin’ Farm
Freewheelin Farm’s 7 ocean side acres are situated 6 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1. We are at the mouth of Major’s Creek canyon and nestled between brussel sprouts, artichokes and grazing cattle. We grow an array of cool climate fruits and vegetables for our roughly 100-member CSA program and various restaurant and wholesale accounts in Santa Cruz and San Francisco.
Farm work at Freewheelin’ is rigorous and rewarding. We seek employees who are dedicated to learning the diverse array of skills that are important in running a small- scale farm. We also see focus and attention to detail as necessary in doing repetitive and fast paced tasks well. We make a point to have fun, to appreciate each other and the work that we do. It is our goal to work in a way that is sustainable, both for our bodies and our minds.
Job Description – Field Worker (2 positions available)
30 - 35 hours/week
Our field Crew will be responsible for various aspects of farm operations. Responsibilities will include greenhouse propagation, irrigation, transplanting, hoeing and hand weeding, harvesting and processing, working the CSA stands, basic tractor work, volunteer and youth crew management, marketing, and the building and maintenance of infrastructure. They will work closely with the farm managers, meeting each morning to discuss the needs and flow of the day as well as the larger goals and visions for the season. We will make a point to create a positive work environment, to model healthy working practices and to provide on-the-job training.
These positions are part time, 30 hours per week (Monday-Friday). We start at 6:00 am two days a week for harvest and at 7:00 am for the remaining days. Occasional weekend work will be required.
Pay is $8/ hour. Workers compensation is provided. Farm produce is available in abundance starting in May/June.
We have an outdoor kitchen, a shower and a yurt, which is a combined office and “hang out” space. Employees are welcome to pitch their own tents on site and share in rustic farm living.
We participate in the Central Coast Farmer Training Program CRAFT. Which offers after hours educational opportunities through a network of local farms.
Qualifications
Employees must be able to commit to a 7 month farm season (April 16th – November 16th) We seek employees who are interested in a career in sustainable agriculture. A season of previous farm experience is required. The ability to participate in the daily physical and mental rigor of farm fieldwork is essential. Lifting, bending, doing repetitive tasks are all part of the job. Must have good people skills in order to get along with other farm employees, neighbors and greater farm community. Our employees should be comfortable and capable of working alone as well as in a team.
